The latest craze in the New England wedding market, especially with Boston area weddings, is called uplighting (or having uplights) at the reception. Brides and grooms are simply falling in love with this lovely lighting, and for good reason: They can transform a beautiful space into a stunning space.
The main purpose of having atmospheric up-lighting services, or up-lights, at your wedding is to enhance your reception space and planned décor. Uplights can accompany and augment your flower arrangements, table centerpieces, linens and more, as they can take shape in various different colors and shades. If you have a large space, uplighting can help fill it in a noticeable yet tasteful way.
Uplighting can be affordable in many circumstances, depending on your needs, desires and budget. We will review briefly some available up-lighting options below, as well as other theatrical and custom lighting scenarios and packages which can help transform your wedding day into a real-life fairytale or bring your big day a new level of uniqueness.

These are the market standard theatrical fixtures in your theme colors, focused to softly glow the perimeter walls of the room. Available options often include: one set color; color-changing LEDs; and wireless, remote controlled, color-changing LEDs.
Custom Cut Initials (a.k.a. Gobo)
These are your special insignias (custom cut “gobo,” or “go between optics,” lights featuring the bride’s and groom’s initials) projected on either the walls or floor of the room. Sometimes you can get a name or image in lieu of the couple’s initials.
Truss Tower Dance Floor Lighting
You can often get up to four truss towers, wrapped in white voile and lit from within with lighting fixtures mounted on top, to light walls and your dance floor. You can choose color and gobos if desired.
Swagged Voile Fabric Canopy:
The room will be transformed with gelled theatrical fixtures projecting up onto white sheers swagged overhead. This can be finished off nicely with dramatic perimeter up-lighting in complementary hues to complete the picture.
Asian Lanterns Canopy:
This is a beautiful scenario in which you create an overhead decorative canopy of white or colored paper lanterns, providing both a soft diffuse glow and added elegance to the room. Dramatic perimeter up-lights in complementary hues can again complete the picture.
Your space will be transformed with string lights in myriad 3″mini globes hung overhead. Additionally, you can again chose to add dramatic perimeter uplighting in a complementary hue to complete the picture for this room lighting transformation.
String Lights in Gauze Canopy:
The wedding reception space will be transformed with gauzy string lights hung from overhead. Similar to the above canopies, you can accompany these string lights with perimeter uplights to add that extra touch.
As you can see, there are plenty of wedding uplighting and other theatrical options available to Greater Boston wedding bride and grooms.
One last item of importance to note: if the DJ, band, or entertainment company you are hiring tells you that uplighting is included in your package, be sure to ask about their experience and qualifications working with professional lighting, as well as the type (wired, wireless, static color, color-changing, LED or “old-fashioned”) of lighting they use, and available colors / color schemes, and in the event of worst-case problems, their considerations for accommodating blown lights or other issues during your reception.
